Salsa Verde Mexican Recipe (Tomatillo green sauce)

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This Mexican salsa verde recipe is one of my family’s favorites. This is my grandmother authentic recipe and my mother have prepared it for a long time.

It is very versatile because we can serve it with tacos, tostadas, chips, meats, chicken, well, in almost all kinds of meals.

You can not miss salsa verde in restaurants and Mexican parties !

Check out my tik tok video here.

I love hot sauces, well not so hot. I rather like to enjoy the mixture of flavors of the sauce, than having my mouth feeling very hot.

You choose how spicy you want the green sauce, you can modify this recipe by adding the amount of chilies to your liking.

This salsa verde recipe is made with tomatillos, jalapeño, garlic, onion, salt and cilatro.

PEppers USED TO MAKE SALSA VERDE

I have been asked what type of peppers are used to make this salsa verde recipe. You can use jalapeño or serrano peppers, the flavor could varies a bit, but in both ways the green sauce is very tasty.

TOMATO TO MAKE THE GREEN SALSA

The kind of tomato that is used to prepare the green sauce is the tomatillo or fresadilla tomato. It is a green, medium-sized tomato that comes wrapped in a thin green peel. This shell is discarded before use it.

SALSA VERDE RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 8 medium tomatillos
  • 3 Jalapeño or Serrano peppers, as you prefer
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • ½ bunch of cilantro
  • 1/2 onion
  • Salt
  • 2 cups of water

Remove the skin from the tomatillos and wash them under cold running water. You will notice that a foam comes out but it is normal.

There are people who wash tomatillos with soap, but because of the foam, I prefer to wash them only with cold water.

Remove the skin from the garlic cloves.

Wash the cilantro and set aside.

Place water in a pot and add the tomatillos, chiles, onion and garlic cloves.

Let cook for ten minutes or until the chiles and tomatillos are cooked. (they will soften and change color).

Put everything except the water in the blender.

Add cilantro and salt.

Blend and check the consistency of your green sauce. If it is very thick, you can add some of the water where we cooked the ingredients little by little until you achieve the consistency you want.

Some people add lemon but for me, this is the best salsa verde for tacos, tostadas, chips, anything you want!
