Interview with Benedict Wong about his character in the new Marvel film, Wong is the Asian superhero in Doctor Strange, librarian of the Sanctum Sanctorum.
At this point, I have seen Dr. Strange twice and the story is becoming more and more fascinating, because he is a new superhero to me, as are all the characters from the 60’s comic coming back in the film; some modernized as is the case with The Ancient One and Wong.
Benedict Wong is Wong in the film; a Martial arts expert, the guardian librarian of the Sanctum Sanctorum who fights alongside Doctor Strange and Mordo in his fight against the villain Kaecilius.
Wong – his favorite moment behind the scenes
We asked him about his favorite moment behind the scenes to which he replied: “I know Benedict and Chiwetel (Mordo) for several years, I have been with them in some films, I am very excited to be part of this incredible cast of actors, of the magnitude of Marvel; very excited; it’s a kind of mix, a kind of childhood dream of being in the Marvel Universe class.”
Benedict Wong told us that in his childhood his favorite superhero was Spider-Man, but he didn’t know Dr. Strange very well.
When he found out there was a Wong character in the movie I couldn’t believe it, he had always asked me where the Asian superheroes were. Wong said.
Benedict told us that he was thrilled that the character of the ’60s was adapted to the modern audience and has become a kind of sergeant fighting alongside Dr. Strange.
The actor told us that he never went to drama school and is always doing a kind of funny low voice as a warm-up exercise for his characters that when rehearsing, has brought him funny situations.
How did Benedict Wong prepare for Wong’s character?
As an actor, I am always looking for what I can do to promote a positive role in my characters and felt this kind of stoic force, the fact that Wong remains aware of the severity of what can happen with those forces that we don’t know and with the story of this arrogant neurosurgeon who becomes a torn-back man who comes to meet himself and is humiliated by a place bigger than himself.
I’m excited to do this character and I think Marvel, Kevin Thelke, and everyone are doing a great job promoting that.
